Bill Clinton’s Accomplishments
In 1992, just two years after the Cold War, Clinton was nominated as democratic nominee for the presidential race. William Jefferson Clinton became the forty-second president of the United States of America in 1993. People saw him as more in touch with the common people than George Bush or Ross Perot. People were ready for a change. He served our country from 1993 to 2001as the fifteenth Democrat elected for president. When entering office he was the third-youngest president including Theodore Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy.
In 1993 Clinton enacted a bill known as the Family Medical Leave Act. This act forced large business to give employees time off in time of illness or pregnancy. Another important thing that happened was the North American Free Trade Agreement, which allowed trade between Canada, U.S., Chili and Mexico.
As president, Bill Clinton was well known for his economic intervention. While in office he promoted economic growth, increased employment, raised wages including minimum wage, reduced prices, promoted equality, managing the money supply and interest rates. He had the budget balanced and promoted American jobs for American people. Clinton views his economic plan as the greatest accomplishment of his presidency.
“The fact that we were able to have 22 million jobs, and record home ownership, and lower interest rates of the people actually had the ability to do more things than ever before,” says Mr. Clinton.
He has been referred to as “centrist.” He was neither right-wing nor left-wing, landing smack dab in the middle. Clinton was in office during the longest time of peace and the economy only got better. While in office Clinton put his wife, Hilary Clinton, in charge of healthcare reform. This made several people upset and uncomfortable. That ended just as quickly as it started as many people were calling it a Socialist attempt for government control. It was never brought up again. Right after the failed attempt at healthcare reform the Republicans won control of the House of Representatives for the first time in forty years. Clinton was the only other Democratic president to be re-elected for a second term other than Franklin D. Roosevelt. They tried to impeach Clinton for obstruction of justice; fortunately he was acquitted by the U.S Senate and finished out his term. At the end of his presidency Clinton reported a surplus of $559 billion and had an approval rating of 65%. This is the highest ending percentage since WWII.
